A League Of Legends World Map Is In The Works, But Will Take Time

If you've tried to find a modern, detailed map of the League of Legends world known as Runeterra and been unable to find precisely what you're looking for, you're not alone. Having a map of Runeterra that's updated with the ever-expanding lore and settings would help both new and veteran players keep up with where their favorite champs come from, and League of Legends designers have responded to requests for an updated map in a recent Ask Riot session.

The question that was raised to the designers mentioned the lore stories of recent champs as well as the stories behind reworked champs. With so many locations in League of Legends — The Shadow Isles, Piltover, Shurima, Icathia, Bilgewater, and Demacia are just a few of the many settings champs come from — players wanted to know if the old Valoran world map would be updated soon to help players better piece together the world of League.

"Absolutely!" senior level designer Riot Bioluminescence began. "As perhaps one of the biggest cartography nerds in the studio, it hurts my soul every time I see the old Runeterra blob map still out there, every time I see a thread asking for a new map. I (and other Rioters) desperately want to bring you a new Runeterra map to replace the old one and help ground the places and people we talk about."

While the team definitely wants to bring an updated map to players, they also said that it'll take some time before it's ready. Not keen on giving away too many details, Bioluminescence also added that they had other things they wanted to release alongside the updated map and that it would likely take several rounds of feedback to get it right and make sure they aren't "setting [themselves] up for trouble in the future."

More cultural artifacts, such as the Medarda Heirloom, are also something that the team would love to release, interactive objects that help players piece together lore. For now, the updated map is planned to have the three major continents of Ionia, Valoran and the Southern/Shurima continent, but they warn that the final product could still be months away.
