League of Legends is topping the 2017 charts as the PC game that brings in the most revenue, according to a recent report by SuperData on various games' earnings from January to June of this year.

In the report, no exact figures were provided to compare dollar amounts between the top 10 games, but with how popular League of Legends is, it's not hard to imagine that the game beat out every other title to come in at the first place as far as PC games are concerned.

Part of what might be surprising though is that the game brings in so much money when it's completely free-to-play. Veteran League players might scoff at the idea, recalling money spent on cosmetics, rune pages, and other in-game purchases, but at its core, League truly is entirely free. It's not even pay-to-win either, as the only buyable stats come from runes that must be purchased with in-game currency called IP that's earned over time. The closest it ever comes to a pay-to-win format is through buying new champions with real money – also available for IP – or purchasing IP Boosts, but you still have to improve your game and earn the IP yourself.

As the report from SuperData points out, much of League's success can be attributed to the fact that gaming is not simply gaming anymore. Those who follow the competitive gaming scene will undoubtedly be familiar with League, a game that brings in hundreds of thousands of viewers every week with its professional matches. By selling tickets to these events, providing merch to represent your favorite team, and even funneling players' money that's spent on team-specific cosmetics back into the team that the items were created for, League has built up a system that doesn't look to be dethroned any time soon.

Coming in at the No. 2 spot for PC games was Dungeon Fighter Online, a game that many player might not have heard of but is extremely popular in China along with the No. 3 game, Crossfire. World of Warcraft also remains in the top five, Overwatch makes a spot in the top 10 on both the PC and on consoles, and one of League's PC MOBA competitors, Dota 2, ranks at No. 7. The top console game is currently FIFA 2017, and the mobile game that earns the most revenue is Honour of Kings.
