The Nintendo World Championships are live now and players are already in the swing of competition with the first set of events for competitive gamers in place. The event is taking place in New York City this year and just in case you weren't able to make it in person, we've got you covered. Watch the competition as it unfolds right here in the video below:

The show is already off to a good start (or frustrating, depending on how you look at it) as Reggie took to the stage to tease a super secret project that the team over at the Big N are currently working on. The Nintendo community is already a-buzz as many pointed out the use of Smash Bros tracks being widely apparent throughout the live stream. Don't get your hopes up yet, however - it makes sense to use the sounds of the popular fighting game for an event centered around competition.

The 2017 Nintendo World Championships will feature 24 players doing what they love to do over the course of a multitude of games. For those looking to see more of the Metroid series, Samus Returns will also be featured during this year's competition.

With the tourney itself being brought back in a big way back in 2015, and the Nintendo Switch recently making its successful rounds within the community, the 2017 celebration is sure to bring with good-natured competition and a healthy dose of pleasant surprises.
