This morning, Edamame Arcade Channel posted a very special interview with Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto. The bulk of the interview is focused on the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, but at the end of the interview Hashimoto-san has a few very interesting statements about what’s in store for Final Fantasy fans in 2018. Check out the interview above — you can track to about the 5:10 mark to see where he starts discussing their plans for next year.
For those of you who can’t watch the video, this is what Hashimoto-san had to say: “Next year will be the 31st [anniversary of Final Fantasy], and our teams are busy working on new titles. Next year will be a big one, and we will bring exciting, new Final Fantasy games to the world. Thank you all for your support.”

This man worked as a producer on series classics like Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XV, and more. Hashimoto-san is serving as the executive producer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III, so his statements have everyone very excited. He said that new Final Fantasy games — games plural — will be coming to the world next year, and if that’s true, then we’ll probably be hearing about them sooner than later.
I feel like I should point out that “new games” might not mean “unannounced games.” It wouldn’t surprise me if Final Fantasy VII Remake is part of that roster of new games coming next year. This writer wouldn’t mind a few classic Final Fantasy games making their way to the Nintendo Switch as well. How about a new Tactics?! We’re long overdue for a SRPG in the Final Fantasy universe!
For now, all we can do is speculate, but we’ll be very eager to see if we get any big reveals at this year’s Game Awards. Stay tuned.
