New details for Xbox’s cancelled reboot of Perfect Dark have surfaced online. One of the earliest games announced for Xbox Series X|S was Perfect Dark, it was announced at The Game Awards in December 2020 and quickly became one of the most anticipated first-party games on the horizon. The game was being developed by one The Initiative, a new studio that was being billed as a “AAAA” studio. Years went by without much of a peep on the game, but it re-emerged back in summer 2024 with the first ever gameplay demo. It looked really good and showed a lot of promise, but unfortunately, it would be the only time we ever saw the game in action.

Perfect Dark was cancelled earlier this summer as part of big sweeping changes across Xbox. Multiple projects were cancelled, studios were shuttered, and many began to feel Xbox’s future was lacking promise. If Xbox could cancel one of its biggest, most expensive projects, what hope was there for other projects? Things only got more frustrating for fans as another report followed in August revealing that Perfect Dark actually could’ve been saved. The Initiative began shopping the project around to other publishers and Take-Two was open to publishing it with Embracer Group. However, the two couldn’t agree on terms and the deal fell apart, ultimately killing the project.
Cancelled Perfect Dark Reboot Gets New Gameplay Details in New Report

With that said, MP1st has gotten its hands on a new design document for the cancelled Perfect Dark that reveals more info on the gameplay of the game. The Initiative realized there was a gap in the spy genre in gaming with franchises like Metal Gear Solid and 007 being dormant for years (ironically both are making a comeback now) and thought Perfect Dark would be the perfect answer. The team planned to reimagine the iconic franchise with a possibility of releasing Perfect Dark episodically, as there is reference to content for a “Season 1”.
Joanna Dark would’ve had a number of special abilities such as one that allowed her to slow down time to dodge bullets a la The Matrix and land more precise shots with ease. She’d also be an efficient combat specialist that could perform special combat takedowns with flashy animations if she killed enough people in quick succession. Joanna would’ve also been able to take advantage of adrenaline to heal herself, reduce damage, and deal more damage to enemies, though it seems it may have come with side effects.
MP1st showed an image of Joanna looking more rugged with heavy eyes and messy hair, suggesting it was the result of using the adrenaline similar to someone experiencing side effects from heavy drug use. It’s unclear if this was something that would happen dynamically depending on player behavior or if it was a part of the story. Either way, it’s a very cool level of detail in Perfect Dark.
It’s unfortunate what happened to Perfect Dark as it seemed extremely promising. The chances of it being saved seem slim to none now, but maybe someone will swoop in to see it through to the finish line.
