It's been a while since Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round, the supposed "last" game in the beat-em-up series, made its way to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But it's seen a pretty good amount of success since that time.

The publishers over at Koei Tecmo confirmed today that the game has managed to surpass nine million downloads in all, including the free-to-play Core Fighters edition that came out some time ago, giving players access to a handful of fighters in the game, while opening up options to buy a few others.

To celebrate the occasion, the publisher has announced a special event in which players can enjoy all 16 playable female characters in the game free of charge for a limited time. Right now, the event is only taking place in Japan, but it's very likely that Koei Tecmo will make them available in other regions as well.

The game originally arrived five (!) years ago, when the Last Round version was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Three years later, Koei Tecmo attempted to capitalize on a bigger player base for the game, releasing the Core Fighters version with the option to purchase additional ones for a small fee – about the same price as the main game.

In addition, the company has also provided a number of outfits for players to outfit their characters with, through paid DLC. These included a variety of Attack On Titan costumes (which, sadly, have been discontinued), as well as a number of swimsuit and other "dream" outfits. A lot of this DLC is still available today, and Koei Tecmo is even offering a few bundle deals, for those of you that want to buy them all in one shot.

Koei Tecmo has been giving more attention to Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 as of late, particularly the virtual reality version of the game, which is said to replicate the "feel" and "smell" of playing along with the girls on the beach…as strange as that may sound. No word yet if the future of the Dead Or Alive fighting series has been finalized, but considering its popularity, we probably haven't seen the last of it.

Dead Or Alive 5: Final Round is available now for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
