Halo Dethroned as Xbox Game With the Highest Gamerscore

Since the introduction of Gamescore for achievements back in the Xbox 360 days, the rating has maintained a niche appeal for bragging rights. Gamescore served as a sort of objective ranking system to compare your performance to your peers and online friends. However, over the years, the legitimacy of the system has come under question after some games started offering achievements for virtually no effort, certain games persisted with glitched/unobtainable achievements, and the rules for Xbox achievements themselves have been changed. Now, a game has penetrated a previously high-water mark for Gamerscore, overthrowing the old record holder, Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Thanks to new achievements approved as part of its Feast of Shadows expansion, The Elder Scrolls Online has set a new record for the maximum amount of Xbox Gamescore offered by a single game. The addition of these two DLC achievements, worth 130 Gamerscore in total, has pushed ESOโ€™s new maximum to an impressive 7,050, just 50 Gamerscore more than Halo: MCC, which held the record for years. Given how many games are included in the collection, it makes sense that it would take an MMO to topple it.

Elder Scrolls Online’s New DLC Achievements

With the introduction of the new DLC, ESO has a grand total of 179 achievements that are worth 7,050 Gamerscore, which is a much better ratio than Halo: MCC, which requires players to complete 400 achievements to gain 7,000 Gamerscore. But it’s not that simple, ESO may have achievements that require more effort to obtain, whereas just beating the campaigns and playing each game’s multiplayer will grant users a bulk of those Halo achievements.

Certain Gamerscore hunters may not care much about these extra ESO achievements, as being an MMO naturally requires a significant time investment to obtain these additional DLC achievements. To get both, the player must complete the Naj-Caldeesh and Black Gem Foundry dungeons on Normal and Veteran difficulties, making this no easy feat.

While fans still wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, they can at least bank on having continued support for The Elder Scrolls Online, and this type of DLC addition is fairly common. Usually there are two new achievements to collect from dungeon DLCs, which means it’s possible ESO can continue to hold this record for the foreseeable future, until another collection, MMO, or simply a massive game releases. I can’t think of what that’d be, but perhaps it’s Grand Theft Auto 6 and a new version of GTA Online, which also receives a solid amount of long-term support, or maybe it’ll be Bethesda toppling itself with Elder Scrolls 6 — one can hope.

Overall, I think even though ESO is breaking through a long-held barrier for a single Xbox game, it doesnโ€™t feel like a cause for concern for those who care about the legitimacy of the Gamerscore system. The achievements still require effort and donโ€™t exceed the current 200 Gamerscore per achievement maximum limit that Xbox had previously set as part of its rules. Xbox allows semi-annual additions of up to 1000 gamerscore, which ESO hasnโ€™t really pushed passed. It would also be difficult for another game to replicate what ESO has done in this case, as it would take years of consistent content updates.
