The last couple weeks have been a bit of a roller coaster for fans of Ubisoft’s Far Cry series. Recently, word got out that Ubisoft was filming live-action footage for “a sequel to an existing global franchise” near a small town in Montana. People immediately jumped to Far Cry 5, and assumed the Montana setting meant the game would be set in the Old West. Insiders would later confirm Montana, but refute the Old West setting, with information pointing toward a modern-day western adventure.
Ubisoft eventually confirmed Far Cry 5, and this week rolled out four live-action teaser trailers. These ironic tourism videos invite viewers to the fictional Hope County, Montana, a place as beautiful as it is foreboding. The teasers strongly hinted at a modern-day setting, as we see things like telephone poles in backgrounds, but the precise time period remained unclear. Based on the videos, Far Cry 5 could take place in 2017 or the 1940s.
Well, Ubisoft has now released the first key art for Far Cry 5, and it gives us a much clearer idea of what we’re in for. You can check it out, below…
As previously rumored, it seems like we’re going to be going up against some kind of armed militia, or possibly full-on cult, as there’s a lot of religious imagery on display here. The image seems to be homage to Da Vinci’s Last Supper, we see a Bible front-and-center, the American flag’s stars have been replaced by crosses, and the poor sap in the bottom-left has been bound and branded a sinner. So yeah, definitely a cult. A current-day setting also seems to be confirmed – the characters look like they could be from the 60s or 70s, but the weaponry in the bottom-right corner is unquestionably modern.
And then, we have the guy in the middle of it all. Every new Far Cry series needs its own magnetic villain, and this guy looks the part. Ubisoft hasn’t provided any information about our new baddie, but if he’s anything like Far Cry 3’s Vaas or Far Cry 4’s Pagan Min, he’s somebody to be feared.
Far Cry 5 will drop its full launch trailer and details on May 26 at 6am PT/9am PT. WWG will also have first-look impressions for you, so prepare yourself for plenty of info, Far Cry fans!
