Nintendo consoles arenโt always known for producing the best-looking games. Even flagship series like Pokemon have been criticized by diehard fans for buggy visuals and an awkward transition to Switch 2, feeling the gameโs textures in recent titles looked like they could have been from the N64 era. However, despite this low fidelity reputation, the new Nintendo system looks set to feature some gorgeous-looking games, one of which was recently praised by Digital Foundry.

In a Bluesky post, Digital Foundry posted a clip of writer John Linneman from a recent DF Weekly podcast episode extolling the visual virtues of Final Fantasy VII Remake, saying the recently demoโd Intergrade was the โbest-looking thingโ he had seen on Switch 2 and put its fidelity above the PS4 version.
Superb Image Quality Fitting Of Final Fantasy
The clip, which comes from episode 228 of DF Direct Weekly, had Linneman bragging about various markers of stability and visual quality during a Gamescom showcase. “I’m gonna say right now, this is the best-looking thing I’ve seen on Switch 2,โ said Linneman. โSeeing that game running at a stable 30fps, with that excellent motion blur especially, it looked fantastic. It was completely stable, and it looked on par. Actually, I would say it looks better than the PS4 version at a glance.โ
The PlayStation 4 and Switch 2 are often compared in terms of hardware capabilities, despite the PS4 being from a previous generation, before the original Switch even releasesd. Back in May, Digital Foundry was invited to a console showcase ahead of the Switch 2โs June release. At this showcase, they rated the Switch 2 as โequivalentโ to the PS4 in terms of visuals. Lineman putting the Switch 2 higher than the PS4 in regards to Final Fantasy would be a nice display of the Switch 2โs potential. Still, the Digital Foundry writer cautioned that this could change in the release version of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
“If I had to guess, and I haven’t been able to compare because we don’t have footage, it’s gonna fall somewhere between the PS4 and PS5 versions,โ said Linneman of the Switch 2โs Final Fantasy VII Remake performance. โSo we’ll see if that holds true for the final game, but that’s the sensation I got while playing it. The image quality was absolutely superb; it looked really great, and it matched the 1080p screen. I was really, really happy about that. So that’s a good one.”
Although this version appears to be coming along smoothly, there is still no officially announced release date for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which is supposed to be coming this year. On August 27th, the official Final Fantasy VII X account announced that Intergrade would be launching โthis winterโ but didnโt provide a more specific timeline than that.
Square Enix, the developer of Final Fantasy VII Remake, appears to be adopting a different approach to its game releases compared to the past. In May, it expressed interest in building a โstrong partnershipโ between the company and Nintendo, and has seemingly embraced a new era that is loosening the shackles of console exclusivity.
