A lot of game companies out there are trying to provide cross-platform compatibility when it comes to online multiplayer. Several manufacturers are on board, including Microsoft, Nintendo and even Steam…but there is one hold-out, and that's Sony.

The creators of the PlayStation have always been hesitant when it comes to offering cross-platform support, mainly because of system security and other lame excuses that have come up. They're still trying to talk a way around the issue, but Epic Games may have already figured that out for them.

According to PSU, Epic Games' latest – and most popular – release seems to have cross-platform support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The video below showcases a player that's enjoying the game on PlayStation 4, but then he gets killed by a player with the name on zCypher Nine – and it's pointed out that they could very well be an Xbox One player.

The user pointed out that it's an Xbox One tag because you cannot create a name with a space on the PlayStation 4. And to further prove his statement, he later moved over to Fortnite on Xbox One and checked out the Gamertag of the player who took him on – and, yep, they've been confirmed as an official Xbox One player. They even took a screenshot of the profile to prove it.

So now this leads to an interesting question – did Epic Games implement cross-platform play without telling Sony about it? Or did they find an online workaround that allows the play without compromising networks? And, for that matter, if it is a feature in the game, why aren't they talking about it? Are they trying to avoid getting in legal hot water with Sony?

Whatever the case, it's looking quite legitimate, and this could be a pretty big step when it comes to getting cross-platform gaming working between Sony and Microsoft – that is, if Sony isn't yelling at Epic Games for allowing it.

Epic hasn't responded to our emails yet, so your guess is as good as ours. But it looks like you have another reason to check out Fortnite, as if the newly announced Battle Royale mode wasn't motivation enough.

Fortnite is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
