2017 has seen some impressive game releases, to say the least. We've been fighting our way through the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands like champs, while also enjoying the likes of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. It's been insanely good.

And yet, despite all these new titles taking a crack in the gaming market, there's one specific title that's ruling with an iron fist in Europe – and it's been out for several years.

A new report from the ERA – the Entertainment Retailers Association – indicates that the top seller for the year in the gaming department has been none other than Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V. That shouldn't be a complete surprise, given that the game is still a top ten seller in other markets. But, number one? That's insane.

The game has managed to sell 334, 280 copies this year alone, adding on to the mega-millions of copies that have already been sold, and continuing Rockstar's epic success with the game.

Leading close behind in second place was Ghost Recon Wildlands, with 311,792 copies sold; Horizon: Zero Dawn, with 286,538 copies sold; soccer sensation FIFA 17 with 242, 385 copies sold; Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, with 204,778 copies sold; and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, with 190,545 copies sold.

Now, whether GTA V can maintain the status quo has yet to be seen, as several big titles will be available in Europe this year, including FIFA 18, Call of Duty: WWII and Star Wars: Battlefront II. But Rockstar Games' title has serious replay value, especially with Grand Theft Auto Online, so we wouldn't be surprised if it ended up with a top five placement, at least.

The report also noted that video game sales have risen 8.4 percent compared to the first half of 2016, and games have accounted for more than 48 percent of entertainment retail market sales in general. That's not too shabby at all.

We'll see how the game fares in the months ahead – and, more importantly, how it'll do against Red Dead Redemption 2 when it finally makes its way to store shelves early next year.
