League of Legends' upcoming champ Kayn has gotten his bio and story today as recent new champs receive when they approach their release, but the story doesn't answer much about the biggest question that players have: What's the deal with the Darkin?

We do get some interesting details on Kayn's backstory from the bio and accompanying story though. During his initial reveal, Kayn was labeled as an Ionian, or at least someone who was fighting for the Ionian forces. Within his bio, it's revealed that he does indeed fight for Ionia against the Noxian forces, but he was not originally from Ionia. Kayn was born in Noxus and was conscripted into the military as Noxian forces are prone to do, but he was abandoned during a raid on Ionia that was meant to showcase the Noxian ferocity, something that Kayn was perfectly capable of expressing from a young age.

Kayn was also seen to have some special interactions in his quotes regarding Zed that showed the assassin regarded Zed with respect as they were both members of the Order of the Shadow, but Kayn's lore reveals that he was actually Zed's greatest student in the ways of the forbidden shadow techniques. It was by Zed's instruction that he traveled to Noxus to obtain Rhaast, the living Darkin scythe that most readers probably wanted the story to focus on.

Unfortunately, much of the story is devoted to Kayn's journey to Noxus, taking out soldiers with slippery shadow moves and dealing with a fellow Order member who's trying to steal his thunder by getting to the scythe first. When we finally do see Rhaast, it's rewarding; the scythe takes control of a Noxian soldier who tries to wield it and kills the vessel's allies with a red eye on the blade that's described as hateful and angry. When Kayn is able to get his hands on Rhaast, you can tell that he quickly falls in love with the power and refuses to give it up.

The story isn't bad compared to a lot of the older champions' lore, but Kayn's dark appearance and menacing weapon already stereotype him pretty strongly without the addition of other components — deserted as a child, unchecked hubris, and a desire for power build him up into a predictable character. The real letdown here is that even after reading the story of the second (official) Darkin champion, we still know precious little about the sentient weapons that are the Darkin.

Check out Kayn's full bio for yourself, and read his short story as well that further explains his journey.
