New starting items to begin matches with in League of Legends was one of the possible additions for the upcoming preseason, but in light of all the other changes, the plans for these go-to items are being tabled for now.

Considering the vast amount of changes that are coming in the preseason involving the Runes Reforged system and the stat changes that are planned for every single champion, it's easy to see why the starting items might take a backseat to other more impactful areas. According to recent statements from Riot Games, it seems that that's exactly what'll happen during this preseason.

"We'd previously mentioned that we'd taking a look at starting items (changes and new ones) during pre-season," Riot Meddler said in a recent Gameplay Thoughts discussion. "After some investigation into options there we've decided not to do so, instead putting more time into runes, base stat changes and some other systemic changes."

In recent months, Riot spoke about potentially adding entirely new starting items as well as changing those that currently exist. One of the goals there was to compensate for the loss of base stats that the current runes grant, something that's vital for certain champions, attack speed runes for junglers being one of the most pressing needs.

An experimental starting item was even previewed before during one of the Runes Corner updates, an item that would grant early attack speed and a bit of on-hit damage and sustain. The stats were even laid out for the Doran's Dagger item at the time of its reveal, but it looks like it might be a while before we see it hit the shop.

However, it's still possible that the item might make an appearance later on along with other starting item changes. Meddler added that they still hope to work on the starting choices later, perhaps even giving bot-lane mages an item as an alternative to marksmen. They hope to give the idea another pass "next year" though, so it'll take some time before any major changes come.
