Nintendo Switch Online Leak Reveals New Upgrades, But Not for Everyone

When it comes to online gaming subscriptions, Nintendo Switch Online is an interesting one. With a library of Nintendo Classics, this subscription plays on nostalgia arguably more than any other. And with the Switch 2 bringing back more Gamecube games, NSO seems poised to keep getting better, at least for those willing to keep their paid subscription active. And according to a new leak, Nintendo just might be planning to finally bring a long-requested feature to its online service. But there might be a catch.

According to Spanish leaker Nash Weedle, Nintendo Switch Online might finally be adding achievements to the Nintendo ecosystem. For many gamers, collecting trophies and achievements is part of the fun, and Nintendo has long been the only platform without this feature. If this intel is correct, Nintendo might be planning to finally correct that. But given that it’s planned to be part of the Nintendo Switch Online service, it looks like only those with an active subscription will be able to get Nintendo achievements.

Achievements Might Be Coming to Nintendo Switch At Last, But Only If You Pay Up

As with any leak or rumor, these details should be taken with a grain of salt until confirmed. Nash Weedle has something of a mixed reputation, so some Nintendo fans are already skeptical. That said, the feature as outlined by the leaker does seem fairly believable.

According to Weedle, Nintendo Switch Online might revamp the existing reward feature to include more existing achievements. Players can already earn points for icons and wallpapers, but specific achievements in individual games have yet to be part of the Nintendo ecosystem. But if this info is reliable, we might finally earn those extra serotonin hits from hitting special milestones in Nintendo games like we currently can on Steam and basically everywhere else.

Unfortunately, it seems like these achievements will be locked behind the Nintendo Switch Online paywall. So, if you play Nintendo games on Switch or Switch 2 but don’t subscribe to NSO, you’ll still be sans achievements. This is a pretty big difference compared to other platforms, which give you those digital trophies regardless of subscription status. Even so, this is a pretty big deal if true, as it’s poised to deliver a longstanding fan request for the Nintendo Switch.

In response to questions about his intel, Weedle notes that he doesn’t have a date for when this new feature might arrive. From the details listed, many fans aren’t sure exactly how different this will be from the existing rewards ecosystem in Nintendo Switch Online. However, many are hoping this might finally be something more like PlayStation Trophies and the Achievements feature on Steam and Xbox.

Until Nintendo confirms any such plans, this is just a rumor. However, with the launch of the Switch 2, Nintendo has already made some changes to what’s included in Nintendo Switch Online. So, it’s likely we’ll see some additional features and changes in the future. Whether these rumored achievements are among the planned changes, we’ll have to wait and see.
