Payday 2 Available For Free On Steam

If you haven't picked up a copy of the bank-robbing game Payday 2 yet, now is just about the best chance that you're going to get. The game is currently available for free on Steam, at least until the first 5 million copies have been claimed.

Back in May, we reported that a Payday 2: Ultimate Edition was set to be released by Overkill Software today on June 8. One of the things that Payday 2 is best known for is the seemingly endless stream of updates and DLC options with over 140 updates made to the base game, and the Ultimate Edition is the final form of the game that will bundle up all previous changes. The Overkill team posted an update on the progress of the Ultimate Edition on the Steam page's discussion boards saying that the game needed a bit more polishing before it was ready to be released, but the company also added that the base edition of Payday 2 will be "free until the Ultimate Edition is released or until supplies run out."

It couldn't be easier to pick up your free copy of the game before the Ultimate Edition comes out. All you have to do is make your way to the game's Steam page and hit the install button, and assuming you make it in before the first 5 million copies are claimed, the game is yours. You can't pick up any DLC for the game though, as all of the extra content has been removed from the store as it'll be included in the Ultimate Edition.

And if you're wondering why you should get the game now instead of just waiting for the final release, Overkill has plans for that, too. Those who own the base game will be able to pay to upgrade to the Ultimate Edition, but the price will depend on "several factors" that will be covered upon the release. The full price of the Ultimate Edition is set to be $45, a price that Overkill says is substantially cheaper than buying all the DLCs separately from the base game.

For those players on consoles, it seems that the bundle is exclusive to Steam. However, Overkill said that there would be more news coming about console developments soon.

Payday 2 is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and has plans to come to the Nintendo Switch later this year.
