At first glance it may not look like much is revealed, but that’s why we’re here. We actually think we’ve noticed the return of a huge feature in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Watch the trailer above and see if you can spot it!

Did you catch it? Before we point it out, let’s go over the obvious additions and details. For one, there’s now a dark, swirling, mysterious void area hanging over one of Alola’s constituent islands. What force, what Pokémon, what organization could be causing this anomaly?

We also see our overly confident rival Ryuki make an appearance, and he seems to meet our protagonist in a gym of sorts. Is it possible that his stardom precedes him in a new way now? Could Ryuki now be a gym leader? Take a look at this new building glimpsed in the trailer, which never appeared in the original Sun and Moon:

It’s a bit of a long-shot, but if Ryuki was going to be a gym leader, then we’d assume that the gym would have something to do with stars or stardom. The building above isn’t the only new building we see in the trailer, either. There are multiple new buildings and areas never before seen in the previous games, and we’re hoping that they’ll lead to some exciting new features or side-quests.

Now for the juicy stuff.

The Return of Buddy Pokemon?!

At the 10-second mark you’ll see a little Rockruff following our protagonist as he runs. It’s only shown for a quick second before the trailer cuts to additional footage. In subsequent shots we see the protag running without a Pokémon following behind, but that short clip got us wondering: are buddy Pokémon finally making a return?!

Not since the days of Yellow and Platinum have we enjoyed the companionship of our favorite Pokémon visually running with us and sticking by our sides as we explore. Some are speculating that buddy Pokémon will make their long-awaited return in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Curiously, this report from Eurogamer from December that seems to supply additional evidence for the return of buddy Pokémon. Apparently dataminers found a wealth of unused animations in Pokémon Sun and Moon‘s files. GIFs were posted of several Pokémon walking animations that we never got to see in the game. “It’s clear a lot of work has gone into designing each creature’s individual animations – birds fly, ghosts hover, Ditto slimes along. Rock Pokémon Graveler curls up into a boulder and rolls. Magikarp simply flops.”

Will we finally get to see this animations in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon? Time will tell! There is one more thing that wasn’t shown off in the English trailer…

New Z-Ring, New Moves

z-ring

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon players will enjoy some new, ultra-powerful Z-Moves as well! We didn’t get to see this in the English trailer for some reason, but the English Pokémon site has been updated with the information.

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the main character wears a Z-Ring in order to use Z-Moves. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the main character will put on a Z-Power Ring, which can use even more varieties of Z-Moves than the Z-Ring! And the games also feature new Z-Moves for certain Pokémon!

With the launch of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, TOMY will be releasing their Pokémon Z-Power Ring around the world. If you put on a Z-Power Ring, your battles and adventures in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon can become even more fun!

Next month we have three new Pokémon games coming out, which should hold us over until November 17th. Stay tuned!
