A popular open-world action game that launched originally on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2009 could soon be coming back in the form of a new remaster. Throughout the lifespan of both the Xbox 360 and PS3, a ton of excellent action titles hit both consoles. Devil May Cry 4, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Assassin’s Creed, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Bayonetta, and so many others all arrived in this generation, giving gamers plenty to play. Now, one action game that many still look back upon fondly seems as though it could be getting a new re-release at some point soon.

Recently, Activision’s Prototype received a strange new update on Steam that many fans were quick to take notice of. Given that Prototype arrived over 15 years ago, a new patch going live for PC was quite peculiar and suggested that something could be happening with the title behind the scenes. This situation became even more peculiar when fans dug into the update further.
In short, those on the Prototype subreddit discovered that this update brought some new testing maps and other cut content to the internal files of the game for one reason or another. It also added new names of developers in the game’s credits, some of which stem from the company Iron Galaxy. This is notable because Iron Galaxy is a studio that has worked on remasters in the past, most recently with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4. The fact that names from the studio have now appeared in the credits of Prototype suggests that it could be working on a remaster of the game at the moment.
How Would This Remaster Be Different?

If Prototype is indeed getting remastered, it would be interesting for a couple of different reasons. For starters, the series has been on ice for well over a decade, with 2012’s Prototype 2 being the last time that we saw the franchise. Because it has been such a long time without a new entry, many presumed that Activision might just be content to leave Prototype in the past.
It’s also worth noting that versions of Prototype and Prototype 2 already exist on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms as the games were re-released in 2015. That being said, these versions that Activision brought to new platforms were generally just ports that didn’t contain any visual or gameplay upgrades. As such, a proper remaster of Prototype is something that would actually go a long way with fans today as it could take advantage of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware in some major ways.
For now, it’s worth stressing that Prototype hasn’t been confirmed to be getting a remaster, so take everything outlined here as speculation for the moment. Still, something seems to be going on with Prototype at Activision and we might not have to wait much longer to find out what it is.
