New PS5 Console Update Released to End July 2026, Here’s What It Does

Sony has today released a new firmware update for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles around the globe. In recent months, Sony has continued to release new PS5 console updates at a steady rate, but most of these patches have done very little to the platform. And while larger overhauls to the PS5 are likely planned to come about before the end of 2026, those changes haven’t been seen with today’s patch.

Downloadable now, PS5 firmware version 26.05-13.60.00 doesn’t do much of anything to the platform. This update only tweaks one aspect of the hardware, which is tied to clarity for messages on certain screens. While this is a particularly minor patch for the PS5, it doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise, as Sony has released countless updates in this vein since the hardware debuted in 2020. As such, we’ll surely continue to see more updates that make very small refinements to the PS5 like this in the coming months and years.

A Larger PS5 Update Will Likely Release Later This Year

Given how Sony has operated in the past, the PS5 typically gets a much larger update each year at some point in the fall. These patches for the hardware often include brand new features for the PS5 that are meant to improve the UI in one way or another. Past updates like this have introduced elements like the Welcome Hub, while PS5 Pro users have received huge improvements to the console’s PSSR technology.

Assuming that another sizable PS5 update in this manner is around the corner, Sony could announce its plans for the patch relatively soon. Normally, before it releases major PS5 updates, Sony will push out these firmware patches in beta for users to test around the globe. As such, we’ll know well in advance if a sizable PS5 update is set to drop before it officially goes live.

That being said, we could begin to see Sony wind down its support for new features on the PS5 in the coming year. With the PS6 known to be on the horizon, and potentially launching in 2027, Sony might be more focused on trying to craft the user experience on its next PlayStation console rather than continuing to refine what’s seen on the PS5. This doesn’t mean that updates for the PS5 will end altogether, but we’ll likely start to see the hardware enter a stage where its patches are mainly meant to provide stability improvements and nothing more.

As for the PS6, Sony hasn’t yet formally announced its next platform, but we should learn more about its existence before long.
