Red Dead Redemption 2 is easily one of the most anticipated games out there, but Rockstar Games felt the need to delay it to early 2018, in the hopes of making it a far more polished sequel than most fans expect.

The problem is, this leaves Take-Two without a major action game to lean on for the holiday season. It'll be fine, though, as it still has games from its sports division, including WWE 2K18 and NBA 2K18. But the publisher hopes to turn this around, starting next year.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, explained his strategy to have a "triple-A" title to lean on every year, starting next year. "We kind of thought we were there in 2015," he noted. "We had a really good schedule and we began to feel like we were delivering on the promise when we said: 'We empathically don't believe in annualizing titles except for sports titles. We want to build a big enough stable of IP so that each season we have a great group of releases.'"

That strategy didn't work out last year. Despite the success of Mafia III, it didn't reach record-breaking levels. And Battleborn, the latest game from Gearbox Software, flopped in the face of Blizzard's superior Overwatch.

But there's apparently a plan in place where the bigger franchises – namely Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption – could see more entries as part of this business strategy. "I don't think there's radical changes in this strategy," noted 2K Games president David Ismailer. "Ideally, we will have one triple-A title every single year."

Now, he didn't specifically say that this would pertain just to GTA and Red Dead, but considering these games are some of Take-Two's biggest hits, it wouldn't be surprising to see follow-ups coming along sooner rather than later. For now, it appears that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the "big one" for 2K in 2018, under the Rockstar Games label.

We'll bring you more information once 2K puts more of this plan into place. Hopefully, we'll see Borderlands 3 incorporated into that somehow.

Red Dead Redemption 2 releases in 2018 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
