Riot Games’ Guide on Getting Hired to Work on League of Legends

Work isn’t always the best thing in the world. Sometimes you just want to call it a day and go home, fire up the computer, and open that beloved League of Legends client. For some of us, League of Legends is a way of life. We eat, sleep, breathe, the most popular PC game in the world.

Unfortunately, we don’t always have the time to surround ourselves with the game. The real world takes over and we actually have to work in order to keep the power on to play the game.

If you’re a League fan and haven’t worked a day in your life yet (perhaps you’re going to school), or are currently in the workforce and you’re looking for the job of your life, perhaps Riot Games is where you want to go.

Riot’s mission statement includes the following:

“We aspire to be the most player-focused game company in the world. We were established in 2006 by a couple of entrepreneurial gamers who believe player-focused game development can result in awesome games. In 2009, we released our debut title, League of Legends, to critical and player acclaim. Over 100 million play every month.”

“We know players form the foundation of our community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the League of Legends experience.”

If this sounds like something you want to join, you better keep on reading! Riot has provided you with some insight on how to get hired by their company!

Make Your Application Stand Out

Standing out and being obnoxious are two completely different things. You can stand out by being obnoxious, sure, but do you think that’s what a future employer wants?

You don’t want to stand out because you send your application in with exploding confetti or you use windings as a font and make Riot translate. You want to stand out to them by offering something that they can’t live without on their team.

“We can get over 100 applications a week for game design spots at Riot, and like many companies, there really isn’t a feasible way to give every application several hours of scrutiny. Therefore, it really helps you to stand out. You do not want to stand out because you use a weird font or color on your cover letter and resume. You want to stand out because of the content of your cover letter and resume.”

Cite Any And All Game Experience

If you’ve ever worked on a game, been part of a release, or even worked in the game industry – make sure you let Riot know. It’s not to say that they don’t want rookies but they definitely would be more inclined to take on someone who’s been a part of the industry before.

“If you don’t have professional game experience, then your resume will probably be on the slight side. And that’s fine. However, it is appropriate to take credit for any game-related accomplishments that you do have. If you are a raid leader or streamer or wrote a strategy guide or made a Starcraft mod or have been a Dungeon Master for 10 years, you should include that!”

Like Riot has said above, tell them about all your game experience! If you’re a Royalty player in H1Z1, a Hearthstone guide creator, or even a master at Minesweeper – tell them!

Swoon With Your Cover Letter

You need to sweep Riot off their feet with your cover letter. Profess your love for games. Don’t be corny and say you can’t live without them but make sure you let them know.

Remember, cover letters are a place to build yourself up. It’s a time to be cocky, but not too cocky.

“The three things you will do as a designer at Riot the most often are: analysis, problem-solving and creating things. So the advice I often give is to demonstrate that you have experience in those areas. It doesn’t have to be professional experience, and for many of our designers, that was not the case. We are one of those studios that will hire a promising candidate right out of college/university. We do it all the time.”

In your cover letter, you need to explain and give examples of previous experiences that relate to the job qualifications. If you have experience solving problems, give Riot an example of when you did it and the end result was fantastic.
