A 2024 RPG that normally costs $14.99 on Steam is currently free to download and keep until Aug 26 at 1:00 pm ET. After this deadline, the PC game will revert to its normal price. If claimed before this, though, it will be a permanent addition to your Steam library at no cost. In addition to PC users, the offer is also extended to Steam Deck users, as the game does run on Steam Deck. How well it runs on the Valve handheld, we do not know, but Valve lists it as “Playable.”

Back in 2024, developer Yanako specifically released a monster-taming RPG inspired by the monster-taming RPGs of the Game Boy Color era. This game is called Dokimon Quest, which, as you can see by the trailer below, is very inspired by Pokรฉmon, in particular. Unfortunately, it’s not as good as Pokรฉmon, but it’s a decent homage to it. To this end, after nearly 400 user reviews, it has a 74% approval rating. There isn’t a consistent thread among the negative reviews, with critiques varied and scattered. Some of these criticisms are aimed at the stability of the game, others are aimed at the visuals, and then some say the game is too complicated. Meanwhile, positive reviews just acknowledge it is a decent Pokรฉmon clone. To this end, if you like Pokรฉmon, there is a decent chance you will like this game, but don’t expect the same quality level.
“A Pretty Solid Game”
“This is a very fun and cheeky retro creature cap RPG,” reads one of these user reviews.
“Very standard and entertaining; of course everyone has their own cup of tea, but after beating the game for what it is, it’s a pretty solid game.”
Another user review adds: “Reminds me of Pokรฉmon, literally almost the exact game with some minor changes as to not fully copy it. It’s a burst of nostalgia, it’s fun, reminds me of when I was a kid playing on the GBC.”
As for the game itself, it is a turn-based monster-taming RPG where you capture, train, and battle alongside 140 monsters as you explore a dangerous open world and attempt to solve the mystery of your missing childhood friend. And there is a sequel coming, so now could prove a timely opportunity if this sequel ends up being a major improvement and larger release as a result. Even if the sequel doesn’t end up being a breakout hit, this is a great value for fans of the genre.
