Shovel Knight offered something exclusive for everybody when it came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Over on the PlayStation versions of the game, you had an awesome boss battle against Kratos from God of War. But on the Xbox One, you got a nice little dose of old-school with the Battletoads, as part of a crossover for the group's appearance in the retro compilation Rare Replay, which came out around the same time.
For those of you that were hoping they'd appear in another version of the game, good news. Today, Yacht Club Games, the developer of Shovel Knight, announced on its blog page that Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove would be making its debut on the Windows Store starting August 24th, for those of you that wanted to download it that way. Previously, it was available on other stores like GOG.com and Steam, where players have been enjoying it quite a bit.
And now for that good news – the team has confirmed that the Battletoads will be making their way to all PC versions of Shovel Knight, with an update expected to drop sometime in October. A specific date wasn't given, but it wouldn't surprise us if the 'Toads arrived just in time for Halloween.
The Battletoads had quite a presence in the Xbox One version of the game, with separate boss fights that emulated from the original NES game, including a rappelling fight and a speeder bike chase where you had to outperform your rival racer, while avoiding crashing yourself. It sure was a lot of fun, and now PC fans will be able to play against them in the PC versions, as a free update.
"We got a mighty big kick out of the news!" the team confirmed, with a GIF that features one of the 'Toads kicking Shovel Knight out of the picture. Hey, that's not nice!
Treasure Trove is the ultimate version of Shovel Knight, featuring the Plague Knight and Specter of Torment expansions in the same package. Now you've got the 'Toads too, and they're a hard offer to turn down.
Shovel Knight is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo Switch and PC.
