What Ghost of Yotei Reveals About Tsushima’s Jin Sakai

Ghost of Yotei may not be a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but the two do have big connections. When it was announced last year that Sucker Punch was making a new game in its “Ghost” series, fans were surprised to see that Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Tsushima, would not be making any appearance. In fact, we knew this wasn’t Sucker Punch trying to hide a big cameo because Ghost of Yotei is set hundreds of years later in a totally different part of Japan. Unless Jin found the secret to immortality between games, we all knew he would be long dead and be totally absent from this game.

However, Jin and Atsu’s stories crossover to a degree in Ghost of Yotei. There are a bunch of Easter eggs for older Sucker Punch games, including the Sly Cooper and Infamous franchises, but the game that gets the most attention is obviously Ghost of Tsushima. The PS4 game was massive and even prompted Sony to start developing a live-action film, which has been treading water for a few years now. Jin Sakai’s story was a huge hit with fans and his legend continues in Ghost of Yotei.

Ghost of Yotei Has a Side Quest Dedicated to Jin Sakai

The easiest to find reference to Jin is in the main quest. While exploring a cave that’s occupied by the Nine Tails, Atsu stumbles upon a letter. The letter informs Lord Saito that the group is planning to develop Wolfsbane, a poison used by Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima. The letter to Saito notes that this was a powerful tool used centuries ago against the Mongols to stop the invasion of Tsushima and claims it was the work of just one man. Ultimately, this is just a nod to the past and shows that Jin’s morally gray methods inspired foes in the future.

However, things get more interesting in a Ghost of Yotei side quest. Once you unlock the southern part of Ezo through the main quest, you can find Ugetsu, the storyteller who roams around the world and tells you of different opportunities in the game. He will tell you that he seeks a katana known as the Storm Blade, but he doesn’t know his origins. He believes once it is found, he will be able to uncover its story.

He then puts you on a path to uncovering its whereabouts with the help of a dark colored fox, dissimilar from the red foxes you see around Ezo. As you explore, you find the crest of the Saki clan and a shack with Jin’s saddle, old weapons, and his helmet. Eventually, you’ll come across the Storm Blade in a cave before discovering a house on a quiet hill. It’s beautiful and surrounded by white flowers. Inside, you discover burnt adoption papers for clan Shimura, a dagger with the name Yuma on it, and an old flute.

Outside of the house, you will find a large red tree similar to the iconic one from Ghost of Tsushima, with a group of Nine Tails who wish to take the sword from you as they believe it holds special power. After they are defeated, you find a grave at the base of the tree and Ugetsu rejoins you. He tells you the story of an unnamed samurai warrior who abandoned the samurai ways to stop a Mongol invasion. However, he was outcast from Tsushima as a result of his methods and was forced to leave his home.

No one knows what happened to him, but it was speculated that he spent his final years in Ezo. Having seen all of the clues up to this point, it’s safe to say Jin Sakai did indeed make his way to Ezo and called it his final resting place. In front of his grave also lies his signature black mask, which you are able to claim and wear for yourself.

It’s a wonderful way to answer some lingering questions about Jin Sakai in Ghost of Yotei. While there are still many years of his life that remain unknown, we know that his story appeared to end peacefully. Whether or not we ever see Jin Sakai in the flesh again remains to be seen, but at least Sucker Punch paid tribute to him in this new game.
