Konami hasn't been dabbling too much with game franchises as of late – unless you count Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, or the many series that it's taking to the pachinko front. But consider us wonderfully surprised when the publisher announced that it was bringing back a fan favorite for a new generation of players to enjoy.

During last night's Playstation press conference to kick off the Tokyo Game Show, the publisher confirmed that it was bringing back Zone of the Enders, its third-person action/adventure franchise focusing on huge droids with powerful weapons. The series got its start on the PlayStation 2, before returning on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a special HD collection. We haven't heard from it since, but it's coming back – for virtual reality.

The game, which is being called Anubis Zone of the Enders Mars, looks to be a remake of Zone of the Enders 2, with touched-up visuals and enhanced controls that really make players feel like they're in charge of a giant metal head-bashing machine. The game will feature 4K resolution, along with "next-gen surround sound," according to the company, as well as an experience that promises to "relive the odyssey from a new perspective."

While some players may be saddened that it's not a traditional Zone of the Enders sequel (or, as a few people have noted, a full-fledged sequel), it's certainly better than nothing, and it might just give the PlayStation VR a necessary boost with its 2018 line-up, which is starting to load up with a few potential titles.

You can watch the trailer above, and while it's not exactly overflowing with details, it looks like the team at Cygames (who are handling the development) are doing a good job at retaining the vision of the classic games that many fans grew up with. Whether it will be a full-fledged success has yet to be seen, but, hey, it's a Konami franchise and it's coming back in some form. We can certainly accept that.

The game doesn't have a release date, but it's due to arrive in 2018 for PlayStation VR, with a PC arrival to follow soon thereafter.
