Even though both The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) grossed over $700 million at the global box office and its two main leads, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, were praised for their performances as Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, that film series is largely considered a dissapointment because the dark, gritty tone didn't match its comic book counterpart and the story itself was convoluted and came across as an afterthought.

On the bright side: Because The Amazing Spider-Man film series failed to excite the audience, Sony made the bold and wonderful decision to partner up with Marvel Studios, allowing Spidey — arguably the best Marvel character of them all — to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of going with Garfield's Spidey, Marvel and Sony chose to start anew, casting Tom Holland to portray the character and introduced him in Captain America: Civil War before kicking of his own franchise.

Like the class act that he is, Garfield gave his blessing to Holland and has expressed a genuine excitement about seeing Spider-Man in the MCU. Now that a the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming has been released, Garfield has watched it and is just as excited to see it as we are.

"I watched it!" Garfield exclaimed to ET at the Critics' Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, where he won Best Actor in an Action Film for Mel Gibson's biographical World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge. "It's great! I think it looks great. I'm really excited to see it, I can't wait. I'm a big fan of Tom and that character, so I'm just really excited to see it."

By the way, today, Garfield landed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for Hacksaw Ridge. Congrats!
