Guardians Of The Galaxy Director On His Hatred For 1986's Howard The Duck Movie

When George Lucas' Howard the Duck hit the silver screen in 1986, it was considered a massive failure on both the critical and commercial fronts, earning only half of its budget back at the domestic box office. It was the only time we saw the avian character in a live action form until James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, where Howard (Seth Green) was featured in a post-credits scene with The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) and Cosmo the Spacedog.

Even though Gunn chose to use Howard in the post-credits scene, that doesn't necessarily mean he was a fan of the Lucas film. In fact, he hated it.

"I was young and I went so excited about it," Gunn recalled, only to immediately describe his distaste for the movie. "That movie sucks!" Gunn told Yahoo Movies. "That movie's terrible!"

He didn't say if the writing or acting bothered him – rather it was rooted in how the Howard puppet ended up looking.

"I wasn't hip with the Caucasian eyelids," Gunn continued. "That upset me because they had the puppet, and it was a duck, and instead of having feathery or white eyelids, he had Caucasian eyelids and it was creepy."

There's been no further information on Howard the Duck making a bigger comeback, whether it either be in a TV show or a Howard-centric feature length film. But it's no secret that Gunn is a huge fan of the character.

"I'm a huge Howard the Duck fan," Gunn reflected. "For people who don't know, I'm a huge Marvel Comics fan, but Howard the Duck was maybe my favorite character as a kid. I went back and I collected all of those comics, I had every comic he was ever in."
