Somewhere in the ether of the superhero genre remains Fox's Gambit project, a movie that's slated to star Hollywood hotshot Channing Tatum (22 Jump Street) as Remy LeBeau, the film's titular character.

Producer Hutch Parker recently confirmed the project was still in the works and now, director Doug Liman — the last director to be attached to project — shared his thoughts on the challenges the project faces.

"You know, it's a crowded field of superhero films so the challenge for Gambit or any of those other movies is finding its unique space and its unique take," Liman told IGN. "But, yeah, I think Simon Kinberg, who is producing it, is a great producer and he'll create something great out of it."

With recent breakout hits in both Logan and Deadpool — as well as Noah Hawley's Legion series for FX — Fox has certainly demonstrated their ability to create unique films that stand apart from Marvel Studio's Marvel Cinematic Universe or Warner Brothers' DC Extended Universe.

Since Liman chose to depart the project late last year due to not being able to develop a "personal connection" with the film, Fox has yet to name another director for the movie.

The challenge Liman says Gambit faces are completely valid, with a nearly a dozen superhero films to premiere within the next year alone. The superhero movie slate at Fox is chock full at the moment, with New Mutants slated to begin filming as early as tomorrow. Production on New Mutants will be followed by Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix shortly thereafter.

Fox has increasingly been growing their superhero repertoire on the small screen as of late. With the first season of Legion having recently wrapped up, the show has been ordered for a ten-episode second season planned for a February 2018 release. In addition to Hawley's breakout FX hit, Matt Nix's The Gifted has been ordered to series after a Bryan Singer-directed pilot wowed the executives at Fox.

The Gifted is slated to air on Fox during the 2017-2018 Fall television.
