Ghost Rider Will Bring FitzSimmons Together In Unusual Ways

Everybody's favorite on-screen couple in Agents of SHIELD are about to undergo some serious tribulations. Fitz and Simmons, better known as FitzSimmons, will find their budding romance tested by supernatural anti-heroes, paranoid government agencies, and the threat of happily ever after. But, when it comes down to it, Iain De Caestecker (Fitz) and Elizabeth Henstridge (Simmons) think Ghost Rider will actually help bring them together.

The co-stars spoke to ComicBook.com's Ashley Robinson at the Season 4 premiere of Agents of SHIELD to talk about their lovey-dovey characters. So, naturally, they were asked whether they felt the two would be brought closer together or further apart by the introduction of Ghost Rider.

Ever the optimist, Iain answered, "Both - That's a diplomatic answer."

Elizabeth also answered, saying, "We're going to see them face some challenges. We've seen them be on different sides of an issue before, but I think now that they are romantically involved, the stakes are higher."

"I don't know how they're going to react to him [Ghost Rider] down the road, but I think the big thing between them right now is a secrecy thing. They're kind of split up in work for the first time."

For fans, these words aren't exactly comforting. Viewers have shipped the two characters since their debut in Season One only for their dreams to be met in Season Three. Much of their friendship-turned-romance has been marred by tragic moments because who can forget Simmon's separation from Iain last season? And, before that, Fitz got enough whump to sink an escape pod to the bottom of the sea - Oh, too soon?

Iain believes the couple is in for an inevitable tragedy, a fact which many fans fear.

"I think with any storyline, happy moments are inevitably, usually going to be followed by tragic moments, so I just see it, somewhere down the road, something has to go wrong," he said. "But for now they seem to be pretty happy! They got through that big bump of being able to be honest with each other, and tell each other how they feel about each other, which was a big deal for them. I think since they started at friends and were so close before they became romantic, that's quite a good foundation for a relationship, right?"

As for how that tragedy could shape-up, fans are not sure. Some fans believe SHIELD itself will be the wedge that drives itself between the two scientists. After all, a new Director will be stepping into oversee the shadowy agency following Coulson's demotion, and he might not be comfortable with his employees dating.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, SHIELD has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship.
