When Hugh Jackman agreed to play Wolverine "one last time" for a third solo movie he made clear from the start that he'd be retiring from the role. And yet, as Logan draws nearer to a theatrical release, there's renewed speculation over whether Jackman is really hanging up the famous X-Men character's claws for good.
Most of that speculation from Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool movie. Deadpool made a few playful references to Jackman and Wolverine. Then, more recently, a rumor broke that Deadpool would be appearing in Logan. Jackman, Reynolds, and Logan director James Mangold were all quick to deny the rumor but did hint hat there be something going on involving Jackman's Wolverine and Reynolds' Deadpool.
That has led to speculation a possible Wolverine and Deadpool team-up movie, possible with ties to the rumored upcoming X-Force movie (Deadpool was a member of Wolverine's X-Force squad). Jackman went on record to admit that the idea even has him hesitating about retirement.
"I'm hesitating because I could totally see how that's the perfect fit," Jackman told Variety. "But the timing may be wrong. I'm at the point where I'm finishing up. In terms of a theory, it's a great idea."
Jackman gave Variety some additional comments, saying that now just seems to be the right time for him to leave Wolverine behind.
"I'm really, really proud of this movie," Jackman says. "I was really keen that I didn't leave the party feeling like I could dance more. I think I'm pretty much danced out, and I had a great time. It's been an unbelievable ride, but it feels right."

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
