Major spoilers for Logan follow.
The saga came to a definitive end in Logan's 141 minute runtime. Jackman's James Howlett fought the full-grown clone of himself, X-24, and while he managed to take out the more durable and scarily aggressive version with the help of X-23 and other young mutant clones, the injuries and poison within him ended up costing him his life.
Logan died and was left buried by X-23 as they set out to complete their adventure to Eden.
What does Logan's death mean for the future of the Wolverine character?
"It was really driven by trying to find the story," Parker said of the creative decision to kill the character. "A lot of that was informed by Hugh's aspirations: what he was looking to do, things he was looking to play, and get a chance to do that are suggested by the comics that he never had a chance to do before. It kind of lead us naturally to this storyline."
"In terms of what it means, Hugh won't play Wolverine on screen anymore," Parker said, which comes as no surprise. Jackman has been adamant about Logan being his last go as Wolverine on the big screen through the entire press tour. In fact, the cast sees Logan as such a brilliant send off that Patrick Stewart joined the retirement party and ruled out any future appearances as Charles Xavier after watching the film for a second time.
As for the Wolverine's seemingly inevitable return to movies, the producer don't appear to have plans just yet. "What it means for Wolverine on screen, we don't know, but I don't foresee anything in the near future with regard to that," Parker said.
In Marvel Comics, Wolverine died in 2014's Death of Wolverine, with Deadpool being left in control the possibilities of his resurrections after Captain America elected him as the worthy candidate to do so. Deadpool, however, is unsure whether resurrecting the mutant is the right decision against allowing him to finally rest. Instead of Logan donning the title of Wolverine in current issue comics, it is X-23 who has taken over.
With Dafne Keen on board for multiple films, the possibility remains for Laura Kinney to become the Wolverine in the X-Men movies universe.
In any case, one thing is for sure: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is really a thing of the past.
Logan is now playing in theaters.
