Spider-Man: Homecoming has finally opened in China and the second-largest market in the world is giving Marvel and Sony's web-slinger a huge boost.
Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $20 million in its first day at the Chinese box office, and $70.3 million in its opening weekend in the region, the third best Chinese opening for a superhero movie.
Those numbers will allow Spider-Man: Homecoming to swing past DC Films' Wonder Woman at the worldwide box office. Wonder Woman's worldwide box office total currently stands at $816.3 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming has now reached $823 million.
That total also makes Spider-Man: Homecoming the second-highest grossing Spider-Man movie of all time, behind Spider-Man 3, which holds a worldwide box office total of $890.9 million.
Spider-Man: Homecoming was probably helped by the presence of Robert Downey Jr. as the ever-popular Iron Man. Tony Stark recruited Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War and returns as Peter's mentor in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Plans are already being made for the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in July 2019. Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are signed on to return for the sequel and director Jon Watts is in talks to do the same.
Before then, Spider-Man will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, fighting alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes against Thanos and the Black Order. He is expected to return in the still untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War as well.0comments
