Marvel Studios isn't a fan of making things permanent. Many of its films have had convenient loopholes that've helped save the day, but Thor: Ragnarok isn't being billed as one of those movies.
ComicBook's Brandon Davis learned first-hand about how deeply Thor: Ragnarok will impact its major players. During a set visit to the sequel, Taika Waititi told press he would be putting Thor through trails he could never come back from.
"Well, he's a lot grubbier. That's been one of my main things. I think everyone is a bit too shiny and clean in the other films. I love heroes that really go through ordeals, and they come out the other end completely changed - not just 'Oh I've got a girlfriend now,'" Waititi said. "They come out the other side, they've been through the ringer."
Of course, fans have gotten a look at Thor's grungy look. Trailers for the film have shown the hero with his hair shaved and trusty hammer demolished. Thor will be forced to undergo lots in his third solo outing, and Waititi says the journey will reflect the progression of Ragnarok itself.
"We do a lot to this character in this film. You know, a lot of people have been wanting to see this idea of Ragnarok. A lot of people are excited by the idea of what Ragnarok means," Waititi admitted. "To me, it means stripping down the establishment of what's already there and then building it up in a new way. [It] is almost like this cyclic idea of Ragnarok."
"So, there's my own personal idea of Ragnarok: what we're doing to the character and to the franchise and to the story. But in a way where what comes out the other end is way more exciting and interesting. And in a way, you can never go back from that."
There's plenty of ways for Thor: Ragnarok to cause damage to the MCU, but fans are thinking its biggest wound will come with Asgard. Hela has been shown bringing the realm to its knees, and Thor will be the one who has to clean up the mess. There's not even a guarantee Thor will be able to stand up to the goddess, so fans will have to wait and see how the MCU's realms fare in the wake of Thor's next outing.
