It’s safe to say that Supergirl, or Kara Zor-El, made a…memorable debut at the end of this summer’s Superman. She drunkenly crashed into Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, picked up Krypto, and then proceeded to call her cousin (who doesn’t swear) a “bitch.” In many ways, Kara seems to be the diametric opposite of Superman, which is why we were somewhat surprised to see her, albeit in silhouette, as part of the retconned Justice Gang in Peacemaker‘s Season 2 premiere. Her appearance left us with a whole lot of questions that we may or may not get answered before her first solo DCU outing in next year’s Supergirl movie, but the three biggest ones are below.

3) Why Didn’t Supergirl Help Her Cousin During the Events of Superman?

The events of Superman put its titular character to the test – he started the film by losing a battle for the first time, nearly died by Kryptonite poisoning in Lex Luthor’s pocket universe prison, and only narrowed stopped an inter-dimensional rift from ripping the planet in two. Sure, the Justice Gang ended up coming to his aid, but Superman really could have used his Kryptonian cousin by his side against Luthor’s multi-pronged attack against him.
We learn in the final scene of the movie that Kara was off-world, hence she wasn’t around to help Superman, and that she likes to visit planets with red suns so she can properly party and get drunk. While that explains her absence, we’re left wondering what’s behind Kara’s wild-child ways. Is she numbing the pain over the loss of Krypton or something, even someone else? Typically, getting as drunk as Kara was in Superman means one is trying to numb or run from pain, and we’re more curious than ever as to why exactly that could be.
Furthermore, given that the upcoming Supergirl movie will be adapting Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, which is an epic celestial adventure, why does Kara need to spend all that much time on Earth to begin with? Does Superman defend the Earth while the rest of space tends to fall under Kara’s purview? That is, if she’s doing any defending or protecting to begin with?
2) How Does Supergirl Know the Justice Gang?

After her scene in Superman, Kara doesn’t come off as much of a team player. Though her appearance was brief, Alcock’s precise and hilarious portrayal of Kara led us to believe that she tends to come and go frequently, and as she pleases. Therefore, we would assume that being a part of a team of metahumans like the Justice Gang would be too much commitment for a character like Kara. Yet she did appear in the “Previously on” alongside Superman, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl in the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere, making it clear that Kara doesn’t just know the other heroes, but has ostensibly worked with them in the past. We need to know how that happened. Did Superman recruit Kara to the Justice Gang, or was it the other way around?
In Superman, the beginning text reads that Clark had only been serving as Superman for three years; therefore, it’s entirely likely that Kara caught the attention of Maxwell Lord and his team of heroes before her cousin did. We need DC Studios co-chief James Gunn to clear up the timeline here, as well as shed some light on what sold Kara on paling around with the Justice Gang to begin with.
1) Will Supergirl Continue to Work With the Justice Gang in the Future?

We’re not entirely sure how formal Superman’s affiliation with the Justice Gang is. In the DCU, the Justice Gang is funded by billionaire Maxwell Lord’s company, LordTech, and presumably, the heroes on the squad are paid via the company, if not regarded as specialized employees. This is further established by the fact that Christopher Smith/Peacemaker does a wildly inappropriate and ultimately unsuccessful interview to join the Justice Gang in his series, along with Lois Lane’s visit to the Hall of Justice (still under construction) in Superman to ask for their help in rescuing Clark from Luthor.
Although Superman knows and works with the Justice Gang, Clark Kent appears to be a full-time employee of The Daily Planet and not LordTech. Does this mean neither he nor Kara are full-fledged members of the Justice Gang, but rather “friends of” or allies? We’re likely to get more world-building about how the Justice Gang works (and eventually becomes the Justice League) as Peacemaker and the other DCU projects roll out, but it’s a major logistical question for Kara given her flightiness and tendency to be off-world as we head into Supergirl next summer.
