2027 is going to be one of the biggest years in superhero movie history. For starters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to bring its Multiverse Saga to an end with Avengers: Secret Wars. The comic storyline of the same name brings the entire Marvel Universe together for a giant battle, so the movie version is sure to follow suit. Speaking of battles, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse also releases in 2027, and there’s little chance it gets to the credits without having all of the Spider-People team up to face a common enemy. At least one 2027 comic book movie is going to try to keep things low-key: The Batman Part II.

There’s been so much secrecy around Matt Reeves’ next movie because it’s taken him a long time to crack the script. Fortunately, it’s finally done, and the filmmaker is ready to spill the beans about what direction the Dark Knight’s next solo adventure is going to take. Here are six things we just learned about The Batman Part II after years of silence.
6) The Batman Part 2 Is Officially Not Part of the DCU

James Gunn’s DC Universe is off to a hot start, with Superman dominating the box office for weeks and Peacemaker finding critical success upon Season 2’s release. All the momentum would make bringing Reeves’ universe into the fold easy, as the DCU is already setting up its version of Batman. However, Reeves is continuing to push the idea that his movies are under the “Elseworlds” umbrella, taking place in a reality completely seperate from the one David Corenswet’s Superman appears in.
5) Sofia Falcone Won’t Be in the Movie

The Batman doesn’t aim to create a dozen different spinoffs, but it is responsible for one, The Penguin. The HBO series follows the titular villain as he attempts to grab power in Gotham, but he doesn’t have an easy go of it. The new head of the Falcone crime family, Sofia Falcone, wants her pound of flesh for being put in Arham Asylum. Despite The Penguin setting up a future for Sofia, Reeves doesn’t have a spot for her in The Batman Part II. The character will just have to hope her show gets another season.
4) Robin Is Fair Game

With the time betwen movies being so long, rumors have been consistenly flooding the Internet, claiming that every character and their mother is going to show up in The Batman Part II. The one that got the most traction involved the Caped Crusader’s sidekick, Robin. While Reeves wouldn’t confirm that the Boy Wonder is part of his plans, he explained that him and his creative team have considered every option.
3) Bruce Wayne/Batman Will Enter New Territory

The Batman covers familiar territory for Bruce Wayne, having him learn that his parents weren’t the upstanding citizens that he remembered. Reeves is aiming for something different with the sequel, as he confirmed that he wants to venture into new territory that has “never been done before.” What that means remains to be seen, but the idea of presenting a fresh challenge for Batman sounds enticing.
2) Matt Reeves Is Bringing in a New Villain

Of course, a Batman movie is only as good as its villain. With so many bad skeletons in the hero’s closet, Reeves is looking find a bad guy that doesn’t have a lot of baggage with them. The filmmaker has confirmed that the villain of hix next film hasn’t really been done before. While that’s sure to dissapoint those who want to see Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze done right, it’s on-brand for Reeves and Co.
1) The Status of The Batman Part 3 Is Up in the Air

Since the beginning, Reeves has made it clear that he envinsions his Batman story as a trilogy. That means one more movie should be in the works, but the director isn’t ready to commit to anything yet. He’s uncertain whether The Batman Part III will happen, so it’s safe to assume the next one won’t end on a major cliffhanger.
The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
