An Underseen Batman Movie Is Streaming Free (And You Probably Haven’t Seen It)

Batman remains one of the biggest and most successful franchises of all time. Artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger introduced fans to Bruce Wayne/Batman in Detective Comics No. 27 in May 1939, and the character quickly took on a life and fan base of his own. Across more than eight decades, Batman has touched all corners of the entertainment landscape, including comics, video games, TV, and films, which have seen the likes of Christian Bale and Ben Affleck don Batman’s cape and cowl to portray the Caped Crusader. There are dozens upon dozens of Batman productions for fans to revisit, including a lesser-known Batman movie that is now streaming for free.

In the movie, the Joker (Mark Hamill) returns to Gotham City to destroy Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy), who is in the midst of training a college student, Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), to replace him as Batman. The voice cast also features Angie Harmon, Dean Stockwell, Arleen Sorkin, Melissa Joan Hart, and Michael Rosenbaum, among others.

Why You Should Watch Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is a must-watch for any Batman fan. The movie bridges the gap between the Batman Beyond series and The New Batman Adventures. In doing so, it manages to combine elements of both the original Batman’s history and lore with the futuristic world of Batman Beyond, adding depth to the story by slowly revealing the fate of the original Joker and explaining Bruce’s solitary life. Driven by a compelling and dark mystery that keeps viewers hooked and featuring strong voice performances, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker remains one of the best entries in the Batman franchise and even holds a rare 100% criticsโ€™ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience rating sits. At 86%.

Despite being so well-loved, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is a lesser-known title within the Batman franchise that many fans likely havenโ€™t seen. That is mostly due to the fact that the movie was controversial at the time it was released. The movie was originally scheduled to debut on Halloween 2000 but was delayed so that heavy edits and revisions could be completed to address the filmโ€™s violence amid a backlash against violence in children’s media that followed the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. An uncensored version was not released until 2002. Even in the streaming era, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker had limited streaming availability.
