Next month, audiences will be treated to Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the second film based on The Secret Service comic series. While the film franchise has taken the original story in a whole new direction, the two properties are more connected than fans might initially think.

While speaking with ComicBook.com at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, The Secret Service artist Dave Gibbons revealed that the Kingsman comic and movies essentially exist in a shared continuity. Check it out in the clip above!
“They might look different,” Gibbons explained, “they might express [things] differently, but it is that same universe.”
While Kingsman: The Secret Service is best described as a loose adaptation of the original comics, Gibbons says that that philosophy ultimately allows the best story to be told in either medium.
“It’s quite clear in these stories that there are things that work well in comics, and things that work well in movies. and they’re not always the same thing, even down to structure. So for me, just to see some source material that I worked on a version of, to see someone take it and run with it and show other possibilities was what made it really exciting.”
According to Gibbons, this sort of loose shared continuity leaves open a large possibility for new spinoffs and stories – particularly within the medium of comics.
“At the moment, although Mark [Millar] and I haven’t done a sequel to the comic book, we are thinking about other stuff set in the Kingsman universe.” Gibbons revealed. “We’re actually getting some other writers and artists to explore it as well, which is always very interesting. Because again, it makes everything much more three-dimensional. I think what’s being set up is a wonderful vehicle to tell exciting stories and I look forward to maybe more of them.”
