How Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting Scene Was Crafted For 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle'

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service sequel features legendary musician Sir Elton John as "himself," and The Golden Circle is so insane it features the singer-songwriter — in full Elton John regalia, Technicolor feather suit and all — kicking ass to his own 1973 single, "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Speaking with ComicBook.com, Vaughn detailed how he selected the musical choices for the action spy comedy.

"Because Elton's in the movie, I came up with the gag of 'Wednesday night's alright for fighting," Vaughn said, referencing the parody poster that accompanied Elton John's casting acknowledgement in May, "and I was thinking, a lot of people aren't gonna understand when he does that."

"I thought, 'God, now we have to show what we're riffing on,'" Vaughn said. "And that was tough, we took three live recordings of his from the seventies and then blended them together, cause we needed it to go on and on and on and hit different beats, and then needed drum rolls and piano playing, guitar solos for each section. So clearing that, if Elton wasn't in the movie, you'd never hear a piece of music like that because he was like, 'do whatever you want.'"

"I didn't know you blended works," said Mark Strong, who reprises his role as tech wizard Merlin. "We did a lot of stuff," Vaughn said. "I like the 'Word Up' at the end, because that was a country western German band doing a cover of the '80s Cameo 'Word Up.' And then we blended in the real 'Word Up' underneath it, and then we did a nod to [Lynryd Skynyrd's] 'Freebird,' and did a few sort of big guitar solos on top. So yeah, I had a lot of fun with the music this time."
