2025’s Biggest Box Office Hit Is Now the #1 Movie on Streaming

Once an unstoppable juggernaut at the box office, Disney has had a very uneven year at the multiplex in 2025. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was the only Marvel Cinematic Universe installment to hit $500 million worldwide this year after Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* underperformed. The live-action Snow White remake was a massive bomb, as was Pixar’s Elio. But the Mouse House also released one of the most successful films this year: the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, which is currently the only American film of 2025 to cross $1 billion worldwide. Unsurprisingly, Lilo & Stitch has parlayed that box office performance into a strong showing at home.

According to FlixPatrol, which measures the popularity of titles on various streaming services, Lilo & Stitch is the #1 movie on Disney+ worldwide, well ahead of other titles like Thunderbolts* and the two Incredibles films.

Helping fuel a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend at the box office, Lilo & Stitch made an immediate splash in theaters by earning $182.6 million domestically over the four-day frame. As the remake brought people to the theater in droves, it also encouraged fans to seek out the breadth of Lilo & Stitch content available on Disney+. Not only did the original 2002 animated film surge to the top of the charts, fans discovered various sequels and TV shows that found their way into the top 10.

Given the popularity of both the remake and the overall franchise, it didn’t come as a surprise when Disney confirmed a live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel is in development. That film doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s been confirmed that Chris Sanders is writing the script. Sanders is an integral part of the Lilo & Stitch brand, as he co-directed and co-wrote the animated original and also provides the voice of Stitch.

Box office flops later find new life on streaming services, so it’s no shock that one of the year’s biggest box office hits is a draw on Disney+. Families have probably been looking forward to Lilo & Stitch‘s streaming release date, giving them an opportunity to rewatch the film at home. Though the remake was available on digital and Blu-ray before hitting Disney+, streaming is likely the more appealing option for many. Rather than spending extra cash on a digital purchase or physical disc, people can take advantage of their Disney+ subscription.

As Lilo & Stitch dominates the streaming charts, its reign as the biggest Hollywood movie of 2025 probably has a shelf life. Odds are, it will be passed by a fellow Disney release. Zootopia 2 is sure a massive draw when it opens over the Thanksgiving window. The 2016 original cleared $1 billion worldwide, so it stands reason to believe the sequel will follow suit. And then December sees the release of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will be looking to match its predecessors’ $2 billion hauls. Not only should those films do well in theaters, they’ll also be hits on Disney+ when the time comes.
