I’m Convinced Marvel Just Revealed Who Is on Sam Wilson’s Avengers Team in Doomsday

So much mystery surrounds the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s next team-up movie, Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios isn’t beating around the bush when it comes to the film’s villain, Doctor Doom, who will be played by former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr., as he appears in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. There’s also the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene to consider, which sees the Fantastic Four’s ship enter Earth-616’s dimension. Other than that, though, it’s anyone’s guess as to what the events of Doomsday will entail. Even the stars of the show, the Avengers, are in a strange place because two teams are vying for control of the brand.

The first contender, of course, is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s team, better known as the New Avengers. They saved New York City from the Void’s wrath, but that wasn’t enough to convince Sam Wilson that the torch is theirs. No, he’s building his own group, with Joaquin Torres, aka Falcon, being his first recruit. While the other members are a mystery at this point, I think Marvel Studios just dropped a major hint that teases who will be joining Team Cap in Doomsday.

Marvel Studios’ D23 Panel May Have Revealed Plenty About Avengers: Doomsday

Kevin Feige loves to put on a show, so Marvel Studios attends every major event it can to promote its projects. However, this year, the powers that be decided to skip San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, opting to leave behind a spot where it dropped some major bombshells in the past. Instead, the MCU took its talents to D23 in Burbank, CA, with the Russo brothers providing an update about the status of Doomsday, which they’re calling “The biggest movie they’ve ever done.” The filmmakers didn’t want to leave the attendees with just a few weirds, though, so they also came with a sizzle reel of sorts that highlighted major moments from past Marvel movies.

All the talk coming out of the event has focused on the inclusion of quotes from Fox’s X-Men movies in the teaser. Of course, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and more will be reprising their roles in Doomsday. The only issue with them hogging the spotlight is that they probably won’t be around for long. Doomsday‘s real mission will be to get the two new Avengers teams on their feet. Thunderbolts* did a lot of the work for the New Avengers, which means Sam’s team is playing catch-up. Fortunately, the D23 teaser also features a couple of heroes who don’t have a team to call their own right now: Thor, Black Panther, and Ant-Man. All three of those names have major connections to the current Captain America, making them seem like natural fits on his squad.

Captain America Will Be Calling on Old Friends in Avengers: Doomsday

While Sam is always by Steve Rogers’ side during the Captain America and Avengers movies, he’s also proving himself to the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Despite having nothing but a few guns and a set of wings, Sam fights Thanos’ forces as hard as anyone, which isn’t something Thor would be able to ignore. Falcon also fosters relationships in Wakanda, as he leans on Shuri and Co. to build his Captain America suit. As for Ant-Man, the miniature hero and Sam have a connection that dates back well over a decade. All that work is sure to pay off in a big way come Doomsday, as Sam will be able to put together a team that gives not only the New Avengers but also the Fantastic Four and X-Men a run for their money.

It remains to be seen whether Sam’s team will be the one that survives the events of Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. After all, it’s hard to imagine the MCU letting two Avengers groups run around on the big screen since the Young Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four all need time to shine. Even if the rest of the group calls it quits after beating Doom, though, Sam will prove to the entire MCU that he’s every bit the leader Steve Rogers was.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
