The costumes weren't the only things to get updated in the recent Power Rangers reboot. The characters also got some modern touches, including the Yellow Ranger.
The character of Trini is played by Becky G (real name Becky Gomez) in the film, and it was revealed by the movie's director Dean Israelite that Trini is gay. When Becky G sat down with The Mary Sue, she was asked how it feels to be the first gay Latina Power Ranger. "It is an honor," she said. "It's something that I was very excited about and, as an actress, there's nothing [more] that I could have asked for." She wants to see that aspect of the character explored in the sequel, saying "The truth is with something like that, you don't just wake up and know. It's a process. And so, as time goes by, if we make Power Rangers 2, 3, 4 … I'm excited to see how she grows."
When asked about her Mexican heritage Becky says "It's funny because I'm American. I'm very proud to be Latina. It's been involved in my everyday life." Something that struck her as a child was in the movie Selena when Abraham Quintanilla makes a speech about being too Mexican for the Americans and too American for the Mexicans and how you can't be in the middle. "I used to stay up at night like, 'I am the middle! What am I gonna do and how am I gonna do it?' and I realize that's not an issue because the truth is whether you're Latin or you're something else, we all come from somewhere. And it's acknowledging that and embracing that … Wearing those flags proudly. I am the crossover and there's a lot of kids just like me."
"Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late."
Power Rangers stars Bryan Cranston (Zordon), Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), David Denman (Sam Scott), Becky G. (Trini/Yellow Ranger), Sarah Grey (Amanda), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), Emily Maddison (Rebecca), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger).
Power Rangers hits Blu-ray and DVD on June 27.
