Jennifer Lawrence does her best 007 impression in this first official trailer for Red Sparrow, her new espionage thriller with Hunger Games 2 - 4 director Francis Lawrence. You can watch it above!
The full Red Sparrow trailer builds on the wonderfully ominous teaser, this time detailing the backstory of Lawrence's character, Dominika Egorova. We learn the girl is not a willing evil agent of the Soviet Union - she is manipulated into covert operations by way of a misleading promise from the government to help her sick mother. Once she's in the sparrow program, however, Dominika finds the real battle isn't for country - it's to retain her soul, as the program tries to strip it away from her.
Francis Lawrence turned around the Hunger Games franchise in a big way, with a nice mix of cinematic artistry and and genre movie pulpiness. Espionage movies can be so cerebral that they're boring (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), or so over-packed with action that they're not cerebral enough (Bourne, the rebooted Bond), so hopefully, Lawrence and Lawrence can once again bring balance to the situation.
Red Sparrow co-stars Joel Edgerton (Bright), Mary-Louise Parker (Red), Ciaran Hinds (Justice League), Jeremy Irons (Justice League), Joely Richardson (The Tudors), Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl) and Charlotte Rampling (Assassin's Creed). It will be in theaters on March 2, 2018.
