Michael Bay's latest attempt to play with the Robots in Disguise might be met with a serious case of sequel fatigue in its opening weekend as the latest Transformers film is predicted to see the lowest opening weekend stateside in franchise history.
Transformers: The Last Knight could do well at the international box office, but the Hollywood Reporter states the film is looking at its lowest five-day domestic debut ever, where it's expected to take in $70 - $75 million.
It would mean the franchise is bringing in diminishing return for Paramount which saw $100 million for the last film, Transformers: Age of Extinction.
This comes in the wake of Bay assembling a writers room in an attempt to kickstart a shared universe of Transformers films; that team resulted in a Bumblebee spinoff set to enter production later this year.
However the film could still do well in the international market. The trade reports that the last Transformers movie made over $858 million overseas, pushing it to be the first in the franchise to make over $1 billion. But even that film made its lowest amount domestically in franchise history, only bringing in $245 million.
It continues the narrative that this 2017 season is one of the lowest-grossing summer blockbuster periods in recent Hollywood history, but it's also a bit harder to predict than being a simple case of sequel fatigue.
The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie might not have been the smash that Disney wanted, but the Fate of the Furious was a roaring success for Universal. And even original movies are not immune — despite Wonder Woman continuing to bring crows in theaters weeks after its release, hopeful franchise starter The Mummy hasn't been doing as well.
While there are patterns of success, Hollywood execs have yet to discover a formula for success.
Transformers: The Last Knight opens in movie theaters June 21.
