What could be causing part of the oppressive heat this summer, at least this Wednesday anyway? Those SEVENTY candles on the top of Marvel's cake, that's what! Happy birthday to the home of some of the most recognizable characters in pop culture today! With that, Marvel has a big birthday bash planned, with several powerful new releases this week! First up for the birthday boys and girls is Marvel Comics #1: 70th Anniversary Edition. It starts here! The original Human Torch, Ka-Zar, and Sub-Mariner are all here, brought to you in a stunning new edition by some amazing talent in the industry today! That's not all birthday fun! The Marvel's Project #1 debuts, with this Ed Brubaker penned tale kicking off the ultimate origin story of the Marvel universe! Look also for the releases of Ultimate Comics Avengers #1 and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1. Both of these titles will give us a post-Ultimatum look at the Ultimate universe. Look also for the continuation of the powerful Dark Avengers/X-Men crossover, Utopia, in Uncanny X-Men #514.

DC Comics brings the action also, with the Superman story Codename: Patriot continuing in Action Comics # 880, with villain Metallo entering the picture, things are sure to heat up! Other 'super' news awaits, as Conner Kent makes his triumphant return in the relaunch of Adventure Comics #1, and this book promises many more familiar and popular characters in subsequent issues. Blackest Night spills out of the pages of Green Lantern, with the first issue of Blackest Night: Batman debuting this week, and be sure to pick up Blackest Night #2 as well, as things are just heating up with this impressive limited series! Don't forget about Green Lantern Corps #39, as the Black Lanterns begin their terrorizing of Oa!

You didn't think that was all, did you? Image Comics is getting in on the fun with the launch of Chris Giarusso's G-Man: Cape Crisis #1. It's also a good week if you're a fan of cult series The Mice Templar, as Mice Templar: Destiny #2 hits stores, and be sure to pick up the latest volume of The Walking Dead is released in trade paperback form, titled What We Become. Dark Horse has a double treat in store for Hellboy fans, as B.P.R.D. 1947 #2 and Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #5 see release. What will happen to Alice in this next issue as Hellboy races to save her? Read to find out! Also releasing this week is Boom! Studios' Farscape: D'Argo's Trial #1, a spin-off book of their popular Farscape series. Focusing on D'Argo, this book should be a welcome addition to the world of the series for fans of the show and the comic alike! So dig in, have some cake, and get down to the comic book store this Wednesday, as there's no shortage of books to keep you occupied!
