Wednesday night, American Pokemon fans rejoiced as their country gained access to Pokemon GO, a new augmented reality mobile app that allows fans to catch and battle Pokemon in the real world. Unfortunately, the United States' neighbor to the north, Canada, has yet to get the Pokemon GO app. The Pokemon Company promised that the game is "coming soon" to other regions, but that could be hours, days or even weeks.
While Niantic Labs (the developer of Pokemon GO) hasn't explained why they haven't rolled out Pokemon GO worldwide, American fans can probably guess the reason. Pokemon GO has been plagued with massive outages as the game's servers struggle with overwhelming traffic. Niantic probably wants to hold off on a worldwide rollout until they can ensure that players during peak traffic hours.
Of course, that doesn't mean that some intrepid Canadians aren't already playing Pokemon GO. Some fans have found work arounds on Android and iPhone devices to get the game a few days early and are already claiming gyms for themselves. However, Canadians should think carefully before finding a way to get Pokemon GO, as there were unconfirmed reports that Niantic banned some players yesterday for cheating the system.
Currently, Pokemon GO is only available in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
