Marvel Comics has announced that the first issue of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz will feature a variant cover by J. Scott Campbell. This news should make the already highly anticipated comic even hotter. Wonderful Wizard of Oz is being written by Eric Shanower of Age of Bronze fame. The artist on the series is Skottie Young of the New X-Men. The comic adapts the classic Frank L. Baum literary tale in a whole new way. To build up buzz for the series, Marvel Comics recently released a free Wonderful Wizard of Oz sketchbook to comic book shops. The sketchbook featured early Skottie Young sketches of Dorothy, Cowardly Lion, Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, Good Witch of the North, Toto, and the Winged Monkeys. The sketchbook also featured preview pages of the first issue, along with commentary by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young. A digital version of the sketchbook is also available for free online at Marvel Comics. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an eight issue mini-series with the first issue hitting comic stores on December 10, 2008. In addition to the variant cover by J. Scott Campbell, the premiere issue will feature a regular cover by Skottie Young and a second variant cover by Eric Shanower.
