One of the newest major players in the Star Wars universe had a long journey before appearing on the screen, and now Lucasfilm is offering a look at how Kelly Marie Tran became Rose Tico.

In a new featurette called "Becoming Rose," the video shows one of the actor's chemistry reads alongside co-star John Boyega, showing when she was selected to be a part of the cast for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Check it out in the clip above.

The clip shows Tran and Boyega reading their test lines as Rose and Finn respectively. Though the dialogue isn't exactly the same as it was in the finished movie, it does do a good job at getting to the heart of the characters and how they interact with each other.

The chemistry read then cuts to writer and director Rian Johnson discussing Tran's audition with producer Ram Bergman, revealing that he was smitten with her portrayal almost immediately.

"I really, really, really, really like Kelly," Johnson tells his collaborator. "She is like Rose stepped off [the page] for me. The character I had in my head when I was writing, it was like she showed up to read."

The clip then jumps to "one year later," with Tran in full costume filming scenes with Boyega on the set of the new movie. The actor had since gotten into the headspace of the character, finding out what is important to Rose and what makes her tick.

"Rose is not an amazing pilot or a Jedi," Tran says. "She's so strong in a different way, and I think that's kind of how she holds her own."

We see that Rose has come to revere Finn in the movie, as stories have been told about how the former Stormtrooper joined the First Order, fought Kylo Ren, and helped destroy the Starkiller Base.

"One of the many reasons why Kelly was right for the part was seeing her and John spark off of each other," Johnson says.

Fans can see Tran's big screen debut and how she interacts with Boyega's Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, now playing in theaters everywhere.
