A new featurette released by Disney and Lucasfilm takes fans behind-the-scenes of Rogue One's creature creation process.
"We all grew up with Star Wars and I never imagined for one minute that I would ever work on a Star Wars production," says Rogue One creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan. "My role on Rogue One is an opportunity to be able to develop techniques, get better at it, not only in the way that we make things but hopefully more successfully creatively in such a way that it feels as Star Wars as it can possibly be."
"The creatures are amazing," says Alan Tudyk, the voice of the droid K-2SO. "Their eyes blink and move, and their lips have very subtle expression."
"You'll look up and one of the creatures is a huge monkey shooting an enormous gun out of a plane," says star Felicity Jones, who plays Jyn Erso. "And then you remember, 'Oh, we're actually in Star Wars."
That monkey creature seems to be one that director Gareth Edwards is particularly fond of.
"I love apes and monkeys in general, and I love space, so when you combine the two into a kind of space monkey its kind of a dream come true," Edwards says.
"You've got to remind yourself that every single day is an amazing thing no matter what you're doing," Edwards adds. "We just happen to be running around with robots and creatures and stuff."
