Leave it to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to rebel. Just last week, the film dropped a new trailer during the Olympics and since silenced any critics who expected the sneak-peek to do just so-so. Rogue One has done away with those fans’ mediocre expectations and managed to cause the biggest buzz across social media over the past week.

ComScore’s PreAct measured just how much buzz Rogue One‘s trailer generated online, and needless to say, it was staggering. The clip spurred over 275k conversations between August 8-14th. The site says those types of numbers were last seen ahead of Suicide Squad‘s opening when over 230k conversations about the film were recorded. But here’s the really impressive thing: Suicide Squad‘s numbers spiked 11 days before the film’s premiere while Rogue One is already pulling in high numbers 124 days ahead of its release.
Talk about some serious hype, guys.
And, honestly, the anticipation is well-deserved. Rogue One‘s latest trailer featured a better look into the Galactic Empire’s workings and even showed a super-short shot of Darth Vader. Fans were also introduced to the film’s new droid Kaytoo (Alan Tudyk), and many of them have remarked how the lanky character reminds them of the Iron Giant.
Other films such as Furious 8 also garnered decent online traction. The upcoming Fast and Furious installment grabbed headlines last week when The Rock openly revealed his on-set before with co-star Vin Diesel. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also started buzzing when Zoe Kravitz’s casting was announced, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter became buzzworthy after its first full-length trailers were dropped.
Still, no one could compare to Rogue One‘s viral numbers. After having been out for only a day, the film’s new trailer had a viewing ratio of 25:1. For context, the average ratio usually held by trailer is only 10:1, so Rogue One‘s audience was nearly three times that. Which, you know, is pretty dang impressive.
As the year moves on, fans can expect to get more teasers and trailers for Rogue One before it finally launches into theaters on December 16th 2016.
