Mark Hamill's legacy in the Star Wars universe is almost unparalleled, perhaps surpassed only by the creator himself George Lucas. Though he's best known for bringing Luke Skywalker to life in four different films, Hamill was nominated for an Emmy Award for voicing one of the most legendary Sith lords in the Star Wars canon.
According to Hamill, it's an award he never felt he deserved. Check out the clip above to hear for yourself.
"I played Darth Bane on [Star Wars: The Clone Wars]," said Hamill. "I don't know how the main cast felt, because I went and did it by myself. Been doing the Joker for 25 years, never got an Emmy nomination. Did that character once; Emmy nomination."
Hamill was speaking with GQ about his time in the franchise, revealing his admiration for the other actors of the voice cast for the animated Star Wars series.
"Now thank god I didn't win because I certainly didn't deserve it," Hamill added. "The cast is just the best voice over people in the business. Here they do 65 episodes, really work hard. I come in for 20 minutes and snag an Emmy nom."
Hamill's performance came in the final episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Season 6 episode called "Sacrifice."
In the episode, Yoda travels to the Sith homeworld of Moraband to pass his final test before he can learn the secret of the Force and retain his identity after dying. When he enters a temple where the Sith used to sacrifice Jedi, he is faced with the ghost of Darth Bane — the ancient Sith lord responsible for imposing the Rule of Two.
The scene features Hamill recording the same lines with different inflections and emotions, all played over each other, to provide a layered and ghoulish effect to the apparition.
He was nominated for a 2015 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program but he lost to Danny Jacobs for the Netflix series All Hail King Julien, a spinoff of Madigascar.
