The cast and crew of a Star Wars film will tell you that making a movie is a bonding experience.

From new stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega’s friendship, to Ian McDiarmid’s mentorship of Hayden Christensen, all the way back to Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill‘s sibling-like closeness, making these films seems like finding a new family.

But actors like Adam Driver don’t want, or can’t, take part in the process lest they ruin their approach to the characters they’re playing on screen. Driver plays Kylo Ren, the patricidal enforcer of the villainous First Order responsible for destroying the new Jedi Order and driving his uncle into exile.

Hamill, who portrays uncle Luke Skywalker in the saga, spoke about wanting to hang out with Driver before filming scenes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where the two are set up to collide.

“He’s very moody and intense,” Mark Hamill said to Vanity Fair. “I remember saying to Adam, ‘I don’t know how you work, or your technique. But, at some point, you were my nephew. I probably bounced you on my knee. I probably babysat for you. There’s that side, and now we’re both estranged from the Skywalker family. All I’m suggesting is, if you’d like, maybe we could go to lunch, we could get together and hang out.’”

But Driver declined the invitation, “and more power to him,” Hamill said of his on-screen nephew.

Driver is a notoriously intense actor, preferring to make his roles “as personal as possible,” he said. While he’s opened up about his process for portraying other characters, but he keeps it to himself when it comes to Kylo Ren.

“The things about that character that I find painful, that I really relate to, I kind of prefer to keep to myself,” he said.

We’ll find out how Kylo reacts to seeing Luke when he sees him for the first time since killing his uncle’s pupils when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
